Financial metrics every owner should monitor

Owners do not need a dashboard with dozens of ratios. They need a short set they actually look at.

Advisory

What to know

The numbers that show whether a business is healthy, profitable, and able to pay its tax and debt.

  • Revenue
  • Gross margin
  • Net profit
  • Cash flow
  • Accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Payroll costs
  • Debt levels
  • Inventory turnover, where inventory matters
  • Tax liabilities, including HST and payroll

Put it into practice

Review them monthly if the business is growing or has employees, and at least quarterly otherwise. The point is to notice a trend while there is still time to act.
